Football is undoubtedly the number one sport for women and girls in England. Last season alone saw 133,000 players compete in affiliated league and cup competitions with 1.6 million women and girl’s taking part in recreational football across the Country. At international level, the England Women’s Squad are looking to continue their successful qualifying campaign ahead of the Euro 2009 Championships, following on from their success in the 2007 Women's World Cup.
In Herefordshire, we have a competitive girls league, which provides weekly fixtures for girls at U10, U12, U14 and U16 age groups. We also have several adult sides that play competitively in regional leagues until the formation of a County Women’s League is developed.
There is one full-time dedicated Girls and Women’s Officer who oversees and is responsible for the development of the female game across the whole of Herefordshire – this includes working with individual players, coaches, volunteers and officials, leagues, clubs, schools and community groups to enhance the quality and quantity of opportunities for women and girls to get involved and progress in the game.
