HFA Launch New Walking Football League

Herefordshire’s first walking football league kicked off on Monday night with teams from across the county descending on the 3G pitch at Hereford...

Whilst Herefordshire FA have previously organised a number of friendlies, tournaments and walking football festivals, as walking football has become more popular there has been growing interest in creating a league. Six teams of over 50’s have entered the league and will meet up once a month to play two 30 minute 6-a-side fixtures.

On Monday night 4 closely fought matches were played between five of the teams from Hereford, Leominster, Ross and Ludlow. Despite the players being unable to run, the football played was fast paced and competitive. All the games were played in good spirit and there was a great atmosphere around the venue. Referee Ian Davies, who referees walking football nationally said

“It’s really encouraging to see a walking football league starting in Herefordshire as the sport continues to grow. Everyone showed up keen to play and their attitude was superb.”

Herefordshire FA would like to thank all the teams competing in the league, the first night was a great success and bodes well for the future. The next round of fixtures will take place at the end of November.

About Walking Football

Older adults are turning to walking football all the time as a means of getting active and having the ball back at their feet and is perfect for those with health/mobility problems. The rules are essentially the same as traditional football with a few changes (crucially running is not permitted). As a result the game relies on accurate passing, good positional play and teamwork.

If you are interested in walking football, either within the competitive setting of the new Herefordshire FA Walking Football League, or you just want to give it a try at a local club, please contact Herefordshire FA. Email: info@HerefordshireFA.com 01432 342179
