COURSE DETAILS

We are pleased to offer our Safeguarding Children Course as an online training module to complete at a time that suits you. This course will replace the Safeguarding Children Workshop.

As part of our strategic goal to raise standards across the game, The FA is committed to safeguarding children in England. From ensuring best practice and recognising poor practice to understanding how to report concerns quickly and effectively, we believe that making football fun, enjoyable and safe is everyone’s responsibility. Read more about The FA’s Respect Principles here.

The course is designed to give you an understanding of safeguarding concerns, as well as how to provide a secure environment for young people.

Upon completion of the course, you’ll receive a Safeguarding Children qualification and certificate that will appear on your FAN account and will be valid for two years. If you completed the old style re-certification which was discontinued in June 2022, the qualification will be valid for three years. You can return to the course to refresh your knowledge at any time.

Please note that our Safeguarding Children Course is available as a module within Introduction to Coaching Football. If you have completed Introduction to Coaching Football, you do not need to complete the Safeguarding Children Course course twice.

Here's how the course works:

The course is split into nine sections with online learning modules, activities and questionnaires to complete throughout. You can drop in and out of each module at your own pace and at a time that suits you best. The modules are followed by knowledge checks and assessments, which you’ll need to pass to complete the course.

Section One: Environment and Culture
Section Two: Children’s Needs
Section Three: What is Abuse?
Section Four: Creating a Safe Environment
Section Five and Six: Recognise and Respond
Section Seven: Report and Record
Section Eight and Nine: Key Messages and Assessment

You will be provided with documents as well as information about laws, policies and contact details to help you throughout the Safeguarding Children Course and when working with young people in football.

The FA Safeguarding certificate needs to be renewed every 3 years. It is essential that volunteers, coaches and referees involved in youth football hold an up to date and current Safeguarding certificate so if yours is expiring soon it needs to be renewed.

If you have not done the Safeguarding course previously then you first need to attend the course in person. However once you have attended the course you can either renew it in person or online. It is recommended for those renewing to take the online course. For details and links to the online Safeguarding workshop please click here
