Tupsley Vets Retain League Title
The Herefordshire FA Summer Vets League came to a conclusion on Sunday as Rapid Moorfields played Tupsley (Civil Service) Vets at Belmont Abbey.
With both teams level on 21pts at the top of the table, Tupsley knew that only victory was good enough against the Moorfields side that had beaten them 4-1 on the opening day of the season. Both teams started strongly on Sunday and it was clear neither team was taking the contest lightly. Midway through the first half Rapid Moorfields took the lead thanks to a direct freekick 30yards from goal. They continued to keep Tupsley at bay until conceding a penalty with less than 10minutes to go which was duly converted. A draw would still have been enough for Moorfields and the final few minutes were a nervous affair for both sets of players. With the last kick of the game Tupsley managed to find the back of the net from close range leaving Moorfields no time to respond.
After a hugely competitive season, Tupsley (Civil Service) Vets therefore retained the trophy they won in 2017 with Moorfields finishing in second. The aim now is for the Herefordshire Champions to play the Worcestershire Vets League winners in a one off match; further details will be announced soon.
The Veterans league has continued to go from strength to strength in recent years and the 2018 season has been one of the most competitive yet. Teams of players aged 35+ compete in 80 minute fixtures at a central venue and fixtures are scheduled around teams availability. Any new interested teams are encouraged to get in touch about taking part in 2019.
